The meaning of the adjective ἀμιστύλλευτος in the syntagm κραδίην ... ἀμιστύλλευτον of Proclus, hymn. 7. 11, is here discussed. Some interpreters bring it back to the philosophical terminology as quality of the indivisible νοῦς, on the basis of a passage of Proclus himself (from the Chaldaic Oracles) and some of Damascius. On the other hand, others have noticed a discrepancy between the philosophical use and that of the Hymn. A solution can be found in the fact that the term belongs to a lexical family well represented in contexts of sacrifice and therefore Proclus makes use of this specific adjective because it reads the story of the legendary dismemberment of Dionysus by the Titans as a sacrificial practice.
