One of the greatest limits of the theory of Markowitz consists in the assumption that all investors preferences can only be represented by the mean and the variance of returns. This assumption is coherent with the utility maximization in only in two cases: either securities returns are assumed to be elliptically distributed or the investorsâ utility function is quadratic. In addition the resulting optimal portfolios suffer lack of diversification and robustness. Black and Litterman, (BL), [1990] and [1992], propose a model in which the diversification and robustness is achieved by a Bayesian process which, in addition, is able to involve investors' " views" . The main aim of the Simaanâ s approach [1993], is instead to include higher moments in the portfolio construction. The main worth of his model relies in the new shape of the distribution modelling returns. Our approach (adapted from Simaan) to portfolio optimization is based on the assumption of skew normality of the assets. The Skew Normal distribution of Azzalini and Dalla Valle [1996] appears a better choice in the assets modelling with respect to the normal one. We obtain stochastic dominance rules for skew normal prospects. Those rules are used in the construction of the portfolio problem. Being the resulting quadratic problem explicitly solvable (with short sales) , we are able to obtain the analytic expression of the efficient frontier and to generalize the problem to a market of investors. This results in an extension of the CAPM of Sharpe and Lintner. Secondly we obtain an extension of the BL model in the SN assumption for the assets. Using the good Bayesian properties of the SN distribution (Liseo and Loperfido [2006]) it is possible to deduce the analytic expression of the predictive posterior distribution. This distribution results SN and its parameters are strongly modified by the â viewsâ of the investor. Finally the predictive posterior is used in the construction of the skew normal portfolio problem conditioned by the " views" . At the end of the thesis is presented an example of portfolio optimization in presence of SN assets. The market which appears more suitable for our approach is surely the Hedge Funds market.
