The measuring of human body has many applications in medical field, like orthopaedics, in the ergonomic studies, in the planning of sport equipment, etc. The measurement operations are usually performed manually by means of non-standardized procedures which can be affected by errors and they can’t be easily repeated. Many sophisticated measurement devices are available, but they are very expensive; they are based on three dimensional scanner system and require specialized personnel to be used. In this paper a low cost prototype to measure the principal anthropometric parameters has been designed. Moreover, a dedicated control software has been implemented too. This code can help the user during measurement and automatically stores the acquired data. The whole system can be used to measure the entire body dimensions and it can be linked to other simulation software developed at the authors’ University in order to reproduce an accurate three dimensional model of the human structure.
