An experimental emulation procedure targeting active phased arrays is presented and implemented at Ka-band targeting a 4 × 4 array employing gallium nitride (GaN) power amplifiers (PAs) and patch antennas. The methodology effectively reproduces the load-modulation conditions experienced by the PAs within the array, enabling the collection of realistic data to assess PA load dependency and overall performance prior to array manufacturing. As a relevant application case, a scenario involving a faulty PA element within the array is demonstrated.

Abstract
