The weirs mentioned by Pliny the Elder (Nat. Hist. III, 53) in Upper Tiber Valley were designed to facilitate the floating of timber extracted from the the region’s woods. The timing of their openings was not dependent on when the reservoirs filled up, but rather on a fixed nine-day period that allowed downstream communities to minimize the damages caused by the sudden release of water and logs.
