In margine all’iscrizione della tomba da fuori Porta Stabia a Pompeii (AE, 2018, 497 = 498)

Through syntactic and contextual analysis, the article reconsiders the logical and chronological relationships between the events mentioned in lines 2-4 and 7-8 of the inscription. This leads to four main proposals: 1) the four-year food aid would have been provided to the gladiators before the munus magnum et splendidum in which they were protagonists; 2) the liberalitas associated with this munus would have consisted in the distribution, upon payment of three victoriati per ration, of baked bread; 3) the bread would have been made from wheat purchased at a price of five denarii per modius and made available upon receipt of compensation of three victoriati per modius; 4) the munus gladiatorium magnum et splendidum would date back to 70 or 71 AD, and the caritas annonae during which it took place would be the reason for the removal of the familiae gladiatoriae more than two hundred miles from Rome.
