A low background experiment to search for the double β decay of 116Cd is in progress at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN (Italy) by using 116CdWO4 crystal scintillators (≈ 1.2 kg) enriched in 116Cd to 82 %. The energy resolution of the detector is FWHM ≈ 5.5% at Q2β of 116Cd (2813 keV); the background rate is 0.28 counts/(yr × keV × kg) in the 2.7–2.9 MeV energy range. After ≈ 1 kg × yr of data taking, the half-life of 116Cd relatively the 2ν2β decay was measured as T1/2 = (2.5 ± 0.5) × 1019 yr and new improved limits on the 2β decay of 116Cd to few excited levels of 116Sn were set at level of 1021 - 1022 yr. In particular, 2ν2β transitions to 2+ states (2112 and 2225 keV) of 116Sn were restricted as T1/2 ≥ 6.0 × 1020 yr and T1/2 ≥ 6.7 × 1020 yr at 90% C.L., respectively, that is approximately one order of magnitude higher than those previously established.
