The initial growth of Mn on Pt(1 1 1) at room temperature has been followed by auger electron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. In the interface formation, two distinct regimes have been observed as a function of manganese deposit, with a sharp change in the growth mode at about 1.6 ML. A model has been developed for the earlier stage of growth, suggesting the formation of an intermixed phase extending to about 14 layers, with an average composition Pt0.89Mn0.11. Abstract
