In this paper the employment of complex cycle gas turbines, particularly regenerative (RGT) and reheat cycles (RHGT) for the repowering of existing steam power plants (SPP) has been analysed. The analysis has been developed with reference to a repowering solution consisting in the use of a proper recovery boiler, fed by exhaust gases from gas turbine (GT) units, which provides both the thermal energy required by the additional steam to be injected into the existing steam turbine and the preheating of the feed water which replaces steam extraction from steam turbine. By using the proposed methodology of investigation and the numerical models developed by Authors, the overall performances of the repowered plants are carried out. The results of the investigation point out that the employment of complex cycle gas turbines, especially reheat cycle, involves an energy performance which is greater than those resulting from the use of simple cycle gas turbines (BGT). Moreover the results show that the repowering solution with additional steam injection is more efficient than the solution with feed water repowering alone. Finally, the energy performances are analysed taking into account the off-design effects induced by the repowering within the working parameters of the existing components.
