Aim of the paper is to give a contribution to the seismic vulnerability evaluation of masonry structures with a more rational approach. First of all, the paper points out that the behaviour of these structures is non-linear elastic, with a peculiar lacking of energy dissipation. This remark springs out by examining the behaviour of the masonry panel under the action of alternant horizontal force in the framework of the usual assumption, for the masonry, of the no tension material. Masonry structures, in any case, exhibit a geometric ductility. Consequently, new response spectra are built to obtain the required connection between strength and ductility. These results are applied to formulate a new procedure for the seismic strength evaluation, with displacement control, of multi-plane masonry walls with openings.
