Airfield pavement design and maintenance planning are mainly affected by traffic loads which will interest the whole life of the pavement. The characterization of the aircraft traffic spectrum and its relative loading of the main and secondary landing gears, is the key to better understand the impact of airport operations on the pavement, and then the evolution of its features during its useful life. A wide experimental campaign on Ciampino Airport has been performed, data on several airplane types and landing and take-off operations have been collected and analyzed, with the main aim to determine the airplanes load distributions on runway pavements. In particular, the transversal and longitudinal distribution of contact points of the landing strips during the landing and take-off movements have been conveniently described. If the aircraft speed is also known, it is possible to derive a map of wheel coverage. A software has been developed able to derive coverage contour map of runway pavements according to different damage criteria
