Despite all the limitations inherent in the type of source and the unequal quality of archaeological data, the study of transport amphorae from the 8th to 13th centuries is proving to be extremely profitable to compare different modes of production, transport and consumption over a period of approx. five centuries and on the scale of the entire Mediterranean. In a nutshell we can distinguish, in our opinion, three different periods in the way the amphorae were used (8th-9th, 10th-11th, 12th-13th centuries), each with its own peculiarities in shapes, sizes, ways and area of transport.

Abstract
Despite all the limitations inherent in the type of source and the unequal quality of archaeological data, the study of transport amphorae from the 8th to 13th centuries is proving to be extremely profitable to compare different modes of production, transport and consumption over a period of approx. five centuries and on the scale of the entire Mediterranean. In a nutshell we can distinguish, in our opinion, three different periods in the way the amphorae were used (8th-9th, 10th-11th, 12th-13th centuries), each with its own peculiarities in shapes, sizes, ways and area of transport.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
