During the last decades, all the industrialized countries have devoted increasing efforts to improve the efficiency of their telecommunication network. This paper gives a report of recent trends in the Italian market and discusses how the present situation has been determined by the coexistence of two different processes. First, we will analyse the effects of the introduction and the spread of wireless technology and then, we will focus on the consequences deriving from the loss of monopolistic power. To this aim, the recent dynamics of fixed and mobile telephone usage and the associated renovation waves are here analysed by means of multi-logistic curves. Market forecasts are also provided.

Abstract

During the last decades, all the industrialized countries have devoted increasing efforts to improve the efficiency of their telecommunication network. This paper gives a report of recent trends in the Italian market and discusses how the present situation has been determined by the coexistence of two different processes. First, we will analyse the effects of the introduction and the spread of wireless technology and then, we will focus on the consequences deriving from the loss of monopolistic power. To this aim, the recent dynamics of fixed and mobile telephone usage and the associated renovation waves are here analysed by means of multi-logistic curves. Market forecasts are also provided.
