The aim of the paper is to evaluate the performance of European low cost and full service carriers from the prospective of efficiency. To this purpose, the major inefficiencies of airlines are analysed through the application of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index. The analysis is applied to a sample of European legacy and low cost carriers. Inputs and outputs are chosen on the basis of previous studies on performance and productivity of airlines. Differentiating characteristics between low cost and full service airlines are also taken into account.
