The optimal design of chirp radar waveforms has to satisfy conflicting requirements in terms of PSLR, compressed pulse width and band occupancy. Optimal solutions for different values of the compression ratio (i.e. 128-256) are considered and evaluated. The Hybrid Non Linear FM 'chirp' waveforms, with either AM and PM modulation, guarantee low range sidelobes (less than -60 dB below the peak for compression ratios of the order of hundreds or more). The aim of this paper is to describe a low-sidelobes waveforms design method for medium and long range surveillance radar applications.
