In this paper, the state of the art in modelling wind loads acting upon bridge decks is traced, by developing a unified approach, consistent in conventions, assumptions and formulation. In detail, starting from the theoretical background associated to the classical thin airfoil model, the general frameworks of frequency and time-domain load models are presented and generalized by eliminating commonly diffused inconsistencies. Moreover, in the same unified context, an overview of the main open topics and advanced strategies aimed to account for nonconventional effects related to both flow three-dimensionality and nonlinear aerodynamics is also proposed.

Abstract

In this paper, the state of the art in modelling wind loads acting upon bridge decks is traced, by developing a unified approach, consistent in conventions, assumptions and formulation. In detail, starting from the theoretical background associated to the classical thin airfoil model, the general frameworks of frequency and time-domain load models are presented and generalized by eliminating commonly diffused inconsistencies. Moreover, in the same unified context, an overview of the main open topics and advanced strategies aimed to account for nonconventional effects related to both flow three-dimensionality and nonlinear aerodynamics is also proposed.
