The paradox of the study of medieval Sicilian history is that we have always known the Islamic component of its culture through the Arabo-Norman inheritance rather than through the traces left by the period of Aghlabid and Fatimid domination. In the last few years there has been arapid evolution of our knowledge, based particularly on the model of research in northern Italy where pottery studies have been decisive in shedding light on the organization of rural society, the structure of production and of exchangenetworks. It is now urgent that ceramic studies of the medieval Maghreb – and particularly those of the early Middle Ages – can multiply, systematize their acquisition, recording and methods of analysis and in so doing take part in an integrated scientific discourse.
