A new fan clutch insertion system based on a previously developed electromagnetic control is presented. FIAT Research Centre (CRF) studied the control strategy and a simulation model, while Baruffaldi S.p.A. developed the device. IVECO carried out the road tests on motorway mission to evaluate the new device. The new insertion logic can reduce the fuel consumption percentage due to the fan till to 0.1 % in a typical motorway mission. This strategy is based on two different ideas: - the “PWM (pulsed width modulation) continuous speed control”, which consists of introducing a continuous rotation speed variation in the e.m. clutch by modulation of the feeding current of the magnet coils; - the “Full Stop” Baruffaldi clutch, able to completely eliminate torque when fan insertion is not required. Experimental road tests carried out by IVECO and CRF in a standard motorway mission, confirmed the effective fuel reduction, as previously theoretically calculated.

Abstract
Experimental road tests carried out by IVECO and CRF in a standard motorway mission, confirmed the effective fuel reduction, as previously theoretically calculated.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
