This article describes a large part of the classic and Renaissance sources – only very rarely mentioned – used by Filippo Baldinucci in the Vocabolario toscano dell’arte del disegno (Tuscan dictionary of the drawing art) (1681) in the headwords about the types of wood generally used for artistic or architectural purposes. Another subject addressed by this essay is the Florentine writer’s frequent use of the Vocabolario della Crusca (the 1623 edition), even for wood species. This is further proof of the merely compilative character of Baldinucci’s lexicon, as clearly emphasised by the headwords about wood for artistic and building purposes.
