In the Italian language nowadays there is a relevant tendency to eliminate the definite article before names of companies, institutions, corporations, associations. This happens even if the main reference grammars consider this omission as ungrammatical. Based on extensive analysis of the corpus of spoken and written Italian, the path is here drawn of a possible change of the linguistic standard with regard to the syntax of the article. Tracing its origin in the economic‑financial and business languages, several structural and sociolinguistic factors are mentioned, explaining the reasons and the ways of the recent and rapid spread of the construction.

Abstract
In the Italian language nowadays there is a relevant tendency to eliminate the definite article before names of companies, institutions, corporations, associations. This happens even if the main reference grammars consider this omission as ungrammatical. Based on extensive analysis of the corpus of spoken and written Italian, the path is here drawn of a possible change of the linguistic standard with regard to the syntax of the article. Tracing its origin in the economic‑financial and business languages, several structural and sociolinguistic factors are mentioned, explaining the reasons and the ways of the recent and rapid spread of the construction.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
