This paper investigates the mechanics of the heavens and the acoustics in the Middle Ages. Starting with the cosmological theory of Plato’s Timaeus, exposed by Martianus Capella, Macrobius, Boethius and Calcidius, it moves to John Scotus Erigena and his usage of Pliny’s apsidal theory for the setting of the harmony of the universe. The last part of the study shows how the knowledge of Aristotle’s De caelo, the Ptolemaic system and the Arab cosmology stimulated attempts to defend the music of the spheres in the late Middle Ages: the texts examined are by pseudo-Adalbodus, Robert Grosseteste, Roger Bacon and other masters.

Abstract
This paper investigates the mechanics of the heavens and the acoustics in the Middle Ages. Starting with the cosmological theory of Plato’s Timaeus, exposed by Martianus Capella, Macrobius, Boethius and Calcidius, it moves to John Scotus Erigena and his usage of Pliny’s apsidal theory for the setting of the harmony of the universe. The last part of the study shows how the knowledge of Aristotle’s De caelo, the Ptolemaic system and the Arab cosmology stimulated attempts to defend the music of the spheres in the late Middle Ages: the texts examined are by pseudo-Adalbodus, Robert Grosseteste, Roger Bacon and other masters.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
