This work focuses on the peculiar characteristics of closed-cell aluminum foams and aluminum honeycomb panels, particularly their energy absorption capability under static compressive loading. Through experimental tests, the specific energy absorption of various samples was evaluated. For the honeycomb panels, the mechanical behavior was analyzed for both large-scale structures and configurations with a reduced number of cells, also assessing the effect of cell count. In larger structures, the specific energy absorption was calculated. For the closed-cell aluminum foams, produced in the laboratory using the powder compaction method with different contents of SiC and TiH2and characterized by varying relative densities, the specific energy absorption was also assessed. Experimental results showed that the specific energy absorption of aluminum honeycomb structures consistently exceeded that of the different types of closed-cell foams. However, the choice of material for each specific application must consider several parameters such as relative density, absorbed energy, peak stress, plateau stress, plateau extension, densification strain, and others. Therefore, overall performance should always be evaluated based on the specific application requirements.
