The perception of decline among foreign pilgrims arriving in Rome for the Jubilee of 1350 was shaped by the idealised image of the city constructed by Christian apologetics. The resulting disappointment contributed to the growth of a reforming spirit that spread throughout the Christian world, with Rome positioned as its symbolic centre. This essay analyses three case studies of foreign intellectuals present in Rome during the latter half of the fourteenth century: a prominent former Spanish bishop who became a hermit, an English Benedictine who was reluctantly appointed cardinal, and a Polish theologian seeking manuscripts.

Abstract
The perception of decline among foreign pilgrims arriving in Rome for the Jubilee of 1350 was shaped by the idealised image of the city constructed by Christian apologetics. The resulting disappointment contributed to the growth of a reforming spirit that spread throughout the Christian world, with Rome positioned as its symbolic centre. This essay analyses three case studies of foreign intellectuals present in Rome during the latter half of the fourteenth century: a prominent former Spanish bishop who became a hermit, an English Benedictine who was reluctantly appointed cardinal, and a Polish theologian seeking manuscripts.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
