Francisci Maurolyci Optica

The present volume contains the four extant works that Maurolico wrote on optics: 1. Photismi de lumine et umbra (Phot.); 2. De erroribus speculorum (Err.); 3. Diaphana (Diaph.); 4. Problemata ad perspectivam et iridem pertinentia (Probl. irid.). These four texts not only concern the same field of research, but also they had previously been collected in the editio princeps in 1611. Maurolico's interest in the field of optical science was quite extensive and covered nearly his entire mathematical career, beginning from 1521 and ending in 1568, a few years before his death. His production included other titles, of which only news came to us: there are extant only the four works in this book, all published together in Naples in 1611. Works of great importance in the sixteenth century panorama: Maurolico revisited the theories of propagation and reflection of light, reflection on flat and spherical mirrors, the formation of shadows, the rainbow; he studied the eye and its anatomy; he treated the phenomenon of refraction. The critical edition of the writings is preceded by an extensive introduction in which the various documents that testify to Maurolico's studies on optics has been established. Next, the relationships between the various witnesses of the manuscript tradition are also shown and the various printing editions are analyzed. Finally, a discussion of the criteria used in preparing this present edition. The edition documents a crucial moment in sixteenth-century scientific culture, in which the Euclidean legacy and the classical mathematical perspective were reorganized within an original investigation of the phenomena of light, reflection, and refraction. The text thus sheds light on Maurolico’s distinctive position within Renaissance mathematics, at the intersection of textual scholarship, geometrical construction, and physical-mathematical inquiry, helping to clarify the significance of his contribution to the transformation of optical science on the threshold of modernity.

In questo volume sono raccolte le quattro opere giunte fino a noi tra quelle che Maurolico scrisse nel campo dell'ottica: 1. Photismi de lumine et umbra (Phot.); 2. De erroribus speculorum (Err.); 3. Diaphana (Diaph.); 4. Problemata ad perspectivam et iridem pertinentia (Probl. irid.). Questi quattro testi non soltanto riguardano lo stesso ambito di indagine, ma furono anche accostati già nell'editio princeps del 1611. L'interesse di Maurolico nel campo della scienza ottica fu esteso e coprì praticamente la sua intera carriera matematica, a partire dal 1521 per arrivare al 1568, pochi anni prima della morte. La sua produzione comprendeva altri titoli, di cui però ci è giunta solo notizia: oggi non rimangono che le quattro opere presentate nel volume, che furono pubblicate insieme a Napoli nel 1611. Opere di notevole importanza nel panorama cinquecentesco: Maurolico rivisitò le teorie di propagazione e riflessione della luce, la riflessione su specchi piani e sferici, la formazione delle ombre, l'arcobaleno; studiò l'occhio e la sua anatomia; trattò il fenomeno della rifrazione. L'edizione critica degli scritti è preceduta da un'ampia introduzione in cui vengono considerate le varie testimonianze relative agli studi sull'ottica di Maurolico. Sono poi indicati i rapporti fra i vari testimoni della tradizione manoscritta e sono analizzate le varie edizioni a stampa. In conclusione, i criteri che hanno guidato l'allestimento della presente edizione. L’edizione documenta un momento cruciale della cultura scientifica del XVI secolo, nel quale l’eredità euclidea e la prospettiva matematica classica vengono riorganizzate entro una ricerca originale sui fenomeni della luce, della riflessione e della rifrazione. Il testo consente così di mettere in luce la peculiare posizione di Maurolico nel quadro della matematica rinascimentale, al crocevia fra filologia dei testi, costruzione geometrica e indagine fisico-matematica, contribuendo a chiarire il significato del suo apporto alla trasformazione della scienza ottica alle soglie della modernità.
