This editorial belongs to the Virtual Special Issue of Applied Energy dedicated to the three SDEWES Conferences held in 2024, namely 4th Latin American Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems 14-17 January 2024 in Vina del Mar, Chile, 2nd Asian-Pacific Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems held 02-05 April 2024 in Gold Coast, Australia and 19th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems held 08-12 September 2024 in Rome, Italy. More than 1000 submissions have been pre-screened and around 50 authors were invited to submit an extended version of their work to this Journal with a final number of 9 published articles. The development of energy systems sustainability is the core of the articles within this Virtual Special Issue.
