Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) occur within the first week after surgery in up to 23% of patients undergoing major surgery and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in perioperative medicine.1, 2 The 30-day mortality in patients with PPCs is far higher than in those who do not develop PPCs (14-30% vs. 0.2-3%).2 Several perioperative interventions can contrib ute to prevent PPCs and consequently reduce the rate of adverse events in the postoperative course. Among these, the role of lung protective ventila tion strategy (LPVS) is still subject of debate.3
