Sul carattere. Modelli di rappresentazione tra natura e libertà

In redefining the ancient problem of character – the notions of ̄ethos- ̆ethos, disposition/type, distinctive mark and aptitude (ἕξις), moral virtue – in the modern and contemporary age, the traditional polarity between necessity and freedom, between nature and culture, is still inscribed in a new form. To what extent is human character free and to what extent is it determined by nature? The book aims to investigate, first and foremost, the “dual” constitution of human character (free and necessary) at the turn of the modern age. Between the Renaissance and the 20th century, the problem underwent a powerful and varied development, from Machiavelli, Ficino, La Bruyère, with the rediscovery of Theophrastus, to Thomas Reid and Immanuel Kant, passing through Leopardi, to Freud, Jung and the dynamic psychology of the 20th century. The research follows and attempts to trace the forms of rationality inscribed in the new conceptual definition of “character” and, at the same time, outlines some models of representation and development of the issue through the history of philosophy, aesthetics and psychology up to the present day.

Nella ridefinizione dell’antico problema del carattere – le nozioni di ̄ethos- ̆ethos, la disposizione/ tipo, il segno distintivo e l’attitudine (ἕξις), la virtù morale – in età moderna e contemporanea, è ancora inscritta, in forma nuova, la tradizionale polarità tra necessità e libertà, tra natura e cultura. In che misura un carattere umano è libero e in quale altra misura è determinato dalla natura? Il libro intende indagare anzitutto la costituzione “duplice” del carattere umano (libero e necessitato), alla svolta dell’età moderna. Tra l’età del Rinascimento e il Novecento il problema conosce uno sviluppo poderoso e variegato, da Machiavelli, Ficino, La Bruyère, con la riscoperta di Teofrasto, a Thomas Reid e Immanuel Kant, passando per Leopardi, fino a Freud, Jung e la psicologia dinamica del Novecento. La ricerca segue e tenta di rintracciare le forme di razionalità inscritte nella nuova definizione concettuale del “carattere” e, insieme, disegna alcuni modelli di rappresentazione e di sviluppo della questione, attraverso la storia della filosofia, l’estetica e la psicologia, fino ai giorni nostri.
