L'idea di natura nel Settecento. Testi eterodossi e clandestini

The book collects and presents, in anthology form, a series of little-known texts drawn from the tradition of heterodox and clandestine philosophical literature between the late 17th and 18th centuries, anonymous or pseudonymous, manuscript or printed. Mostly unpublished in Italian, these texts offer a comprehensive picture of 18th-century naturalism, later taken up in various forms by the great authors of the European Enlightenment. It is the hidden base of the intellectual iceberg of which Shaftesbury, Voltaire, Hume, Condillac, etc. represent the most visible tips. The galaxy of anonymous, heterodox and clandestine writers gave modern philosophy a decisive turning point in the sense of the critical reception of the “systems” of Descartes, Spinoza, Newton and Leibniz. Interpreted in a materialist key, these systems made it possible to construct a new image of nature as an inexhaustible source of energy and force, capable of forging all beings and all forms of life without the intervention of a creator. This image eventually found its way into the philosophies of nature at the end of the 18th century, ushering in an “aesthetic” and “pathetic” sensibility towards the natural world that would become fully established in the following centuries, right up to the present day.

Il libro raccoglie e presenta, in antologia, una serie di testi poco noti, tratti dalla tradizione della letteratura filosofica eterodossa e clandestina tra la fine del Seicento e il secolo XVIII, anonimi o pseudonimi, manoscritti o a stampa. Per lo più inediti in italiano, tali testi offrono un quadro esaustivo del naturalismo settecentesco, assunto più tardi, in varie forme, dai grandi autori dell’Illuminismo europeo. È il fondo nascosto dell’iceberg intellettuale di cui i vari Shaftesbury, Voltaire, Hume, Condillac ecc. rappresentano le punte più visibili. La galassia degli anonimi, eterodossi e clandestini, ha impresso alla filosofia moderna la svolta decisiva, nel senso della ricezione critica dei “sistemi” di Descartes, Spinoza, Newton e Leibniz. Interpretati in chiave materialista, questi sistemi hanno permesso di costruire una nuova immagine della natura intesa come fucina inesauribile di energia e di forza, in grado di forgiare tutti gli esseri e tutte le forme del vivente, senza l’intervento di un creatore. Tale immagine è infine passata nelle filosofie della natura della fine del secolo XVIII, inaugurando la “sensibilità estetica” e “patetica” nei confronti del mondo naturale che s’affermerà pienamente nei secoli successivi, fino al nostro.
