3D Technologies for the digitisation of complex cultural artefacts : ViMMoB, a Virtual Museum of Movable Books · This article presents the Virtual Museum of Movable Books (ViMMoB) project, an initiative that is part of the activities of the Distretto Tecnologico per i beni Culturali of Lazio, funded by PNRR Changes project. The project aims to create a digital museum dedicated to an important collection of movable books from the Panizzi Library in Reggio Emilia. Movable books, artisanal artefacts produced from the Middle Ages to modern times, are characterised by mechanical and paratextual devices that require the reader’s interaction to produce two-dimensional, three-dimensional and kinetic visual effects. These artefacts, precursors of modern forms of interactive and multimedia communication, are significant historical evidence of the dialectic between innovation and tradition in forms of communication. Given their rarity and fragility, the ViMMoB project aims to expand their accessibility and usability through the combined use of two-dimensional digitisation techniques, three-dimensional reconstructions and video recordings, while contributing to their preservation.
