The paper examines the use and semantic function of dactylo-epitrites in Euripides’ lyric. This category of metres, which was meant to evoke the epic-lyric and encomiastic tradition in the audience’s mind, is attested mainly until the Trojan Women (415 BC). The presence of dactylo-epitrites is especially meaningful in the Medea (431 BC), where they constitute the rhythmic basis of the first strophic pair in each of the first four stasima.

Abstract
The paper examines the use and semantic function of dactylo-epitrites in Euripides’ lyric. This category of metres, which was meant to evoke the epic-lyric and encomiastic tradition in the audience’s mind, is attested mainly until the Trojan Women (415 BC). The presence of dactylo-epitrites is especially meaningful in the Medea (431 BC), where they constitute the rhythmic basis of the first strophic pair in each of the first four stasima.File in questo prodotto:
