This contribution explores the presence of food in the dramaturgy and on the stage of the Comédie-Italienne de Paris, focusing on the evolution of Harlequin’s mask in the second half of the 18th century, when he moves away from the Zanni of the Bergamo valleys and keeps his primal instincts under control, without however renouncing his need to eat. It also shows how the evolution of repertoire and acting corresponds to a different role for food.
