Il processo compositivo del De sphaera et cylindro ex traditione Maurolyci

Development and Composition of De sphaera et cylindro ex traditione Maurolyci M. Clagett showed that Francesco Maurolico's revision of On the Sphere and Cylinder by Archimedes is a reworking of Liber de curvis superficiebus, a medieval text ascribed to John of Tynemouth. Clagett took under scrutiny the relationship between Maurolico's work and that of Archimedes and tried to explain the presence in Maurolico's text of Archimedean results absent in the Liber de curvis superficiebus. In our paper, we will prove that Maurolico, after 1544, modified the work to make it more like that of Archimedes. We show additionally that this revision was not completed, as witnessed by various anomalies in Maurolico's text.
