The paper tracks the presence of Italian travelers, traders, and physicians in Yemen since the mid-nineteenth century and uncovers their motives and methods in collecting Islamic manuscripts. It pays particular attention to Giuseppe Caprotti's relations with Eugenio Griffini and the latter's role in the fate of the Caprotti Collection, from Sana'a to the Ambrosiana Library in Milan.
