Abandoned wells have a great potential for heat extraction. By integrating heat extraction from abandoned wells with renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind energy, not only a much more significant condition from energy efficiency perspective is achieved, but also a more desirable condition from economic and environmental aspects is obtained. Therefore, there is a strong tendency toward the integration of heat extraction from abandoned wells with renewables. Considering this point, different ways for the utilization of recovered heat from abandoned wells with renewable energy resources are introduced and discussed here, while a concise literature review is also done. This will give a broad perspective to researchers, designers, investors, and policymakers for understanding the current trends and advances, comparing different technologies, and choosing the best alternatives for further purposes.
