This essay reconstructs the prerogatives of the streets judiciary, active in Rome since 1227, through the textual and formal analysis of the sentences issued by its officials. They demonstrate that its definitive organization as a judicial structure endowed with real coercive power and special prerogatives occurred in the 1260s, during the first senatorate of Charles of Anjou. The sentences also make it possible to clarify at least in part in which cases the intervention of the magistri ufficiorum was involved and how they acted.

Abstract
This essay reconstructs the prerogatives of the streets judiciary, active in Rome since 1227, through the textual and formal analysis of the sentences issued by its officials. They demonstrate that its definitive organization as a judicial structure endowed with real coercive power and special prerogatives occurred in the 1260s, during the first senatorate of Charles of Anjou. The sentences also make it possible to clarify at least in part in which cases the intervention of the magistri ufficiorum was involved and how they acted.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
