Uno schiavo di Publius Ciartius Sergianus sul retro di una lastra del Lapidario Profano ex Lateranense

The article examines the hitherto unknown side of an opisthographic marble slab from the antiquarian market and conserved at the ex–Lateran Profane Lapidarium. The inscription, which is flawed but has been completed on the basis of comparisons and autoptic examination of the piece, refers to a slave of Publius Ciartius Sergianus, already known from other similar epigraphic evidence found in the burial ground at the basilica of St. Paul Outside–the–Walls. Dating from the second century AD, this too may have originated from the same necropolis along the Via Ostiense, where it is likely there was a tomb for the slaves and freedmen of the gens Ciartia.

L’articolo prende in esame il lato finora sconosciuto di una lastra marmorea opistografa proveniente dal mercato antiquario e conservata presso il Lapidario Profano ex Lateranense. L’iscrizione, lacunosa ma integrata sulla base di confronti e dell’esame autoptico del pezzo, ricorda uno schiavo di Publius Ciartius Sergianus, già noto da altre simili testimonianze epigrafiche rinvenute nel sepolcreto presso la basilica di S. Paolo f.l.m. Databile al II sec. d.C., anch’essa potrebbe provenire dalla stessa necropoli lungo la via Ostiense, dove è verosimile esistesse un sepolcro per gli schiavi e liberti della gens Ciartia.
