The essay investigates the possible typological connections in the Chanson de Roland between the figure of Charlemagne and the prophet Joshua, already identified as a model for warrior kings, especially in the Carolingian era. The literary fields that best express the world of prefiguration in the Old Testament were therefore examined, including that of the Bibles moralisées, although recentiores than the Chanson de Roland.
