The article analyzes Diderot’s research of a new history, which has not yet been the subject of a historiographic study. His conception of history is related to geography and philosophy. Diderot criticises the historians of the Academy and develops a method of formation, without neglecting the ancient sources. Its history is cross-border, retrospective and useful to shed light on the origins of present evils: feudal privileges and authoritarian political forms. Keywords: Diderot, Enlightenment, eighteenth century, cross-border history, retrospective method, usefulness of history, ancient sources, Tacitus, Seneca.
