The figure of Father Sebastiano Resta is introduced here, aiming to provide the reader of the present issue with a compass to orient himself on both the historical-critical and bibliographic levels. Resta’s originality as a collector and a connoisseur is fully reflected in his activity as an art critic and writer, for which the dialogue between the numerous images of art and the many words associated with it was constant. The selection of these terms, examined here by several scholars, drawn from the oratorian’s marginal notes to the sources of art history, from his correspondence and his comments over the collected drawings, constitutes a first, specific insight into the collector’s prose, highlighting his role in the art historiography of his time.
