The article presents the revolutionary work of Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei as architect in the urban transformation of Caochangdi, a little suburb of Beijing. The destiny of the area was the whole demolition, to allow the construction of a new residential massive compound. Ai Wei Wei trig a different process, designing there his own studio, and then building, together with the inhabitants, several other minimalist buildings with a high architectural quality, that create, in a short time, a spontaneous and original “art village” that change the life and the economy of the suburb, transforming it in a worldwide significant architectural prototype.
