Knowledge and respect are the essential combination to guarantee targeted and respectful restoration of the architectural heritage. Same principles are essential also for the planning of enhancement interventions capable of giving new life to the buildings and guaranteeing their conservation in full respect of their artistic significance, of the material value and specific architectural connotations. Theory and practice of architectural restoration of archaeological sites of Tivoli and Palestrina, churches, palaces, so-called minor buildings, villages and historic centres of Lazio had be illustrated using a unique method of investigation, based on principles and guidelines operative of the Italian restoration. Abstract

This contribution presents some results of research experiences conducted in the Roman and Lazio area as part of the Course of Architectural Restoration in the decade 2012-2022, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Theory and practice of architectural restoration of archaeological sites of Tivoli and Palestrina, churches, palaces, so-called minor buildings, villages and historic centres of Lazio had be illustrated using a unique method of investigation, based on principles and guidelines operative of the Italian restoration. These research topics, carried out in cooperation with a number of prestigious Italian Research Institutes and Superintendencies, have been explored in depth in degree and doctoral theses, also touching on the complex problem of the relationship between historic buildings and plant upgrades. The results achieved, some published, demonstrate the usefulness of a possible coexistence between historical-artistic sensitivity, technical knowledge and new uses of the architectural heritage.
