Dante nell'opera di Kavafis e di Kazantzakis : poetiche a confronto

Both K. P. Kavafis and N. Kazantzakis were united, each in his own way, by a tenacious sense of belonging to the Greek universe, but they were also very different in their stylistic and expressive choices, given that the paths they pursued individually remained parallel and opposite : the Alexandrian always seeking redemption through Art, with the subdued expression of his inner world ; the Cretan always seeking to make his inner “cry” break out into the world outside. Both of them used Dante to fulfil the above-mentioned personal aims and, in line with their own personalities, their relationship with the Florentine poet was also marked by two distinct and antithetical attitudes : Dante provided a poetic reference for a poet Cavafy, endowed with extraordinary wisdom and irony (virtues also acknowledged and admired by Kazantzakis himself) in his effort to free himself from the pressing atmosphere of his city, Alexandria ; for Kazantzakis, on the other hand, Dante’s example was more interiorised on the basis of a deep spiritual interrelationship.

Tanto K. P. Kavafis quanto N. Kazantzakis erano accomunati, ciascuno a suo modo, da un tenace senso di appartenenza alla grecità, ma erano anche molto diversificati nelle scelte stilistiche ed espressive, visto che le strade individualmente perseguite rimasero comunque parallele e di segno opposto : l’alessandrino sempre alla ricerca di un riscatto attraverso l’Arte, con la sommessa espressione del proprio mondo interiore ; il cretese intento in ogni occasione a far esplodere all’esterno il proprio “grido” interiore. Ciascuno dei due si servì di Dante per assolvere ai suddetti scopi e, coerentemente con la propria personalità, anche il rispettivo rapporto con il poeta fiorentino è stato connotato da due precisi atteggiamenti distinti e antitetici : Dante è valso da referente poetico per un poeta Kavafis, dotato di straordinaria saggezza e ironia (virtù riconosciute e ammirate anche dallo stesso Kazantzakis) nello sforzo di liberarsi dalla pressante atmosfera della sua città, Alessandria ; per Kazantzakis, invece, l’esempio dantesco è stato maggiormente interiorizzato sulla base di una profonda interrelazione spirituale.
