In the many social hierarchies of early Irish law, the word ollam (< PC *al-isamos) is often used to describe the position of ‘first’, and applies also to the hierarchy of kings. While in Old Irish the position of ‘(institutional) second, heir’ is expressed by ánṡruth and tánaise, Middle Welsh preserves the word eil ‘second, heir’ (< PC *al-yos), etymologically connected to OI ollam. The same meaning and etymology can be found in Lat. altellus (< *al-ter(o)-(e)lo-s), which was the epithet of Romulus as ‘second’ of Titus Tatius. Apparently, among the many words used in the Indo-European languages to name the ‘second after the king’, the words formed on PIE *h2el- are an Italo-Celtic isogloss.
