Le «apocalissi culturali» e le logiche di senso delle altre culture : attorno a De Martino e al Covid-19

there are books that are not books, but worlds. one of these rare world-books is ernesto De martino’s volume, La fine del mondo. Contribution to the analysis of cultural apocalypses (1978). in this posthumous work, the great Neapolitan anthropologist offers a very rich picture of the human being’s “cri- sis of presence in the world”, the latest of which is the one we are currently experiencing with the covid-19 pandemic. first and foremost, it is an anthro- pological crisis of sense that calls for the gathering of all the existential and sym- bolic forces at man’s disposal, in face of the dehumanization of the human being, in order to reconfigure a new order of sense in our daily lives, disrupted by the pandemic. the essay deals with the different solutions proposed by De martino, which are very relevant today, in the delicate process of transcen- dence in value, that is to say the surpassing of the endangered situation of the human-species by establishment of different forms of human interactions and relations that are more free and worthy from an anthropological point of view. it is a process of ‘cultural apocalypse’ that can reveal to us the paths towards that end, which is more necessary today than ever. the focal point of the in- vestigation concerns the dynamics of the confrontation between Western cul- ture, nowadays hegemonic, and other cultures, which should not be simply ‘integrated’ but welcomed as models or challenges to be faced and/or under- stood precisely in their otherness (an ethnological humanism). this is stated in view of a process of re-humanization that is all the more urgent as the signs of other forms of ‘apocalypse without escaton’ (pandemics, climate crisis, global warming, environmental sustainability, etc.) are becoming more numerous, and are converging today towards the heart of the crisis. in defense of a human, never before so threatened.

Ci sono libri che non sono libri, ma mondi. Uno di questi rari libri- mondo è il volume di ernesto De martino, La fine del mondo. Contributo all’analisi delle apocalissi culturali (1978). in questo scritto postumo, il grande antropologo l’umano, l’ultima delle quali è quella che stiamo vivendo con la pandemia da covid-19. Si tratta anzitutto di una crisi antropologica di senso che necessita la chia- mata a raccolta di tutte le forze esistenziali e simboliche di cui l’uomo dispone, di fronte alla de-umanizzazione dell’umano, per riconfigurare un nuovo ordine di senso del nostro vivere quotidiano, sconvolto dalla pandemia. il saggio af- fronta le diverse «soluzioni» proposte da De martino, molto attuali, nel delicato processo di trascendimento – della situazione di messa in pericolo della spe- cie-uomo –, nel valore, ossia nell’istituzione di diverse forme di relazioni umane più antropologicamente degne e libere. È un processo di «apocalisse culturale» che può rivelarci le vie da percorrere verso quel fine, oggi più che mai necessario. il punto focale dell’indagine verte sulle dinamiche del confronto tra la cultura occidentale, oggi egemone, e le culture altre, che non vanno semplicemente ‘integrate’ ma accolte positivamente come altrettanti modelli o sfide da affron- tare e/o comprendere appunto nella loro alterità (un umanesimo etnologico). ciò in vista di un processo di re-humanization tanto più urgente quanto più pre- occupanti sono i segnali di altre forme di «apocalissi senza escaton» (pandemia, crisi climatica, riscaldamento globale, sostenibilità ambientale ecc.) che si mol- tiplicano a vista d’occhio e convergono oggi nel cuore della ‘crisi’. in difesa di un umano mai prima d’ora minacciato tanto.
