The subject of this paper is a clay stamp found in Camarina (Sicily), whose imprint bears the jugate portrait of Isis and Serapis, of a type very similar to that used in the coinage of Syracuse and other cities of eastern Sicily during the reign of Hieron II (c.271-216 BCE). The paper attempts to understand the use of this singular – perhaps unique – artefact and suggests that it relates to the Lex Hieronica agricultural taxation system developed during the Hieronian period in the territory subject to the influence of Syracuse: a territory that included Camarina.

Abstract
The subject of this paper is a clay stamp found in Camarina (Sicily), whose imprint bears the jugate portrait of Isis and Serapis, of a type very similar to that used in the coinage of Syracuse and other cities of eastern Sicily during the reign of Hieron II (c.271-216 BCE). The paper attempts to understand the use of this singular – perhaps unique – artefact and suggests that it relates to the Lex Hieronica agricultural taxation system developed during the Hieronian period in the territory subject to the influence of Syracuse: a territory that included Camarina.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
