Le grandissime maraviglie e gran diversitadi of the East: Analysis of the linguistic-rhetorical structures of the Milione · Marco Polo’s Milione was immediately associated with the idea of wonder in the sense of the fabulous, the magical, the incredible. However, this vision of the Orient, rather than belonging to the text, was projected onto it by its readers. The study focuses on the linguistic tools that convey feelings of surprise, wonder, and strangeness, in order to understand as much as possible the meaning and the values that Marco Polo intended to convey and the Tuscan translator-adapter intended to deliver to Western readers. The method of analysis allows us to establish solid points of reference with which to examine lexical choices and syntactic structures and to evaluate their linguistic-textual function within a fabric in which formulaic style and original description of the unknown, rhetoric and expressive need, eyewitness report and ideological filtration are interwoven.

Al Milione di Marco Polo è stata subito associata l’idea della meraviglia nel senso del favoloso, del magico, dell’incredibile. Tuttavia, questa visione dell’Oriente, più che appartenere al testo, è stata proiettata su di esso dai suoi lettori. Lo studio si concentra sugli strumenti linguistici che veicolano i sentimenti di sorpresa, di meraviglia, di estraneità, allo scopo di comprendere il più possibile il senso e i valori che Marco Polo intendeva trasmettere e il volgarizzatore-adattatore toscano intendeva consegnare ai lettori occidentali. Il metodo d’analisi consente di fissare punti di riferimento solidi con cui esaminare le scelte lessicali e le strutture sintattiche e valutare la loro funzione linguistico-testuale all’interno di un tessuto in cui s’intrecciano stile formulare e descrizione originale dell’incognito, retorica ed esigenza espressiva, registrazione autoptica e filtrazione ideologica.
