The choral song of Aristophanes’ Thesmophoriazusae (ll. 947-1000) is one of the most significant examples – in the ancient Greek theatre – of choreia, the harmonious synthesis of words, music, song and dance. In this paper we propose a hypothetical reconstruction of the performance of this song through textual and metric elements, supposing what might have taken place in the orchestra. With this choral song Aristophanes offers the audience of the Theatre of Dionysus a brilliant dance performance and, at the same time, continues to “challenge” in the dramatic art Euripides, who is the protagonist – together with his theatre – of this comedy.

Abstract
The choral song of Aristophanes’ Thesmophoriazusae (ll. 947-1000) is one of the most significant examples – in the ancient Greek theatre – of choreia, the harmonious synthesis of words, music, song and dance. In this paper we propose a hypothetical reconstruction of the performance of this song through textual and metric elements, supposing what might have taken place in the orchestra. With this choral song Aristophanes offers the audience of the Theatre of Dionysus a brilliant dance performance and, at the same time, continues to “challenge” in the dramatic art Euripides, who is the protagonist – together with his theatre – of this comedy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
