An analysis of the hyperbolic dimension of ethics can be developed according to two different paths. The trace of the excess that the term etymologically refers to can be interpreted as a ‘launch’ beyond the limits of the human, which could imply an implosion of its stability and security foundations (maybe as a first step to a new beginning and deeper authenticity). The hyperbole that remains more in line with its use as a rhetorical figure underlines in a person or behaviour what appears to be exemplary, supererogatory or even heroic (as well as their opposite). Praise can be sincere, but it can also insinuate the doubt whether this is really ‘too much’ or ‘impossible’. The risks of a hyperbolic ethics are real. At the same time, the awareness of a tension can be preserved in it, which permeates the question of the universal and fosters understanding human condition as a ‘middle term’ between good and evil.
