The chapter critically reviews the post-war reconstruction in Italy and mainly the story of an announced gap between North and South. It also reinforces in spatial planning the debate that opposes the new southerners to the liberals of the North (as the philosopher Benedetto Croce highlighted). The predominance of the first over the second favours the policy of public intervention in the South in the period 1947-1957 contributing to the creation of study centres of the "Southern question" as the Svimez , which assume a central role in territorial planning
