This paper focuses on the two similes that frame Dido’s story in the Aeneid, the former comparing her to Diana who overtops all the nymphs surrounding her (1, 498-502), the latter to the Moon only dimly visible among the clouds (6, 453- 454), examining to what extent the Diana simile involves hints to the Moon as well. Moreover I shall demonstrate that in Iopas’ song at the end of book 1 there is no reference to Dido, but the real celestial body is the subject involved.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the two similes that frame Dido’s story in the Aeneid, the former comparing her to Diana who overtops all the nymphs surrounding her (1, 498-502), the latter to the Moon only dimly visible among the clouds (6, 453- 454), examining to what extent the Diana simile involves hints to the Moon as well. Moreover I shall demonstrate that in Iopas’ song at the end of book 1 there is no reference to Dido, but the real celestial body is the subject involved.File in questo prodotto:
